Manchester City One Win Away From EPL Title Following Arsenal Loss
Manchester City will be officially crowned champions of England with a victory over Chelsea this Sunday. The Citizens grabbed a 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park, courtesy a brace from İlkay Gündoğan and Erling Haaland’s 36th league goal of the season. The main talking point of the weekend, however, was Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton. Following Man City’s win over Everton, the Gunners had to win to keep up the pace but were thoroughly beaten by a Brighton side who looked like the hungrier side. With a 4-point lead and a one-game advantage, only an unprecedented collapse never seen in English football would see Man City lose the title from here onward.
Barcelona Crowned LaLiga Champions
Barcelona has won their first league title in 4 years with a 4-2 victory over rivals Espanyol at Cornellà-El Prat. In previous championships, the club’s attacking prowess has been the key, but this time it was their defense that made the difference. Barcelona kept 25 clean sheets this season, conceding just 13 goals with 4 games to go. Of those clean sheets, 15 were achieved at Nou Camp, where they conceded just 2 league goals in 17 games, none of which came from open play. Despite the players’ celebratory mood, the celebrations were dampened by Espanyol fans who invaded the pitch in protest. Barcelona will have to wait until their next home game this weekend to continue their well-deserved celebrations.
Chelsea Wins Women’s FA Cup
Newly crowned Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year, Sam Kerr scored the decisive goal as Chelsea defeated Manchester United to win the FA Cup for the fourth time in six seasons and the third consecutive year. The match was played in front of a record-breaking crowd of 77,390, the largest attendance ever for a women’s domestic fixture. The game was evenly contested, with Manchester United having the better chances in the first 20 minutes but failing to convert them into goals. Ultimately, it was Chelsea’s depth that made the difference as substitute Pernille Harder set up Kerr for the game-winning goal. With the FA Cup now in the bag, both teams will shift their focus to the Women’s Super League, where Manchester United currently leads by a point, with Chelsea sitting in second place, having played one game fewer.
Mauricio Pochettino Agrees Deal With Chelsea
The long search for a new manager for the Blues has finally come to an end as former Tottenham coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has been appointed on a reported 4-year deal. The 51-year-old Argentine, who had been out of work since being sacked by PSG last summer, will officially take charge from June 1st, with interim coach Frank Lampard expected to remain in charge for the remainder of the ongoing season. During his five-year tenure at Spurs, Pochettino did not win a title, but he managed to lead the team to four Top 4 finishes, a second-place finish in the 2016/2017 season, and their first-ever Champions League final appearance in 2019.
Romelu Lukaku On Fire As Inter Win 7 In A Row
Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku maintained his excellent form as Inter Milan recorded their seventh consecutive victory in all competitions. The Chelsea loanee scored two goals as the Nerazzurri defeated Sassuolo 4-2 at the San Siro, moving them into third place in the Serie A. Lukaku now has a total of five goals and three assists in his last four league matches, which has boosted the team’s confidence ahead of their second leg match against Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.
NBA Conference Finals Set
The NBA conference finals have been determined, and they will be a repeat of the 2020 Bubble matchups. In the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets, led by two-time MVP Nikola Jokić, who are the #1 seed, will take on the defending champions, the Los Angeles Lakers, spearheaded by LeBron James. Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat will face off in the Eastern Conference finals for the third time in four years. Following the Philadelphia 76ers’ exit at the hands of the Celtics, newly crowned league MVP Joel Embiid remains the only MVP in history to never make a conference final in a career, sparking rumors that there could be major changes to the team this coming summer.
Gift Orban Nets 3rd Hat-Trick For Gent
20-year-old Nigerian striker, Gift Orban was once again on target for Gent as he netted a second-half hat-trick – his third since signing – for the Belgian side as they beat Cercle Brugge 4-0. Gift, who transferred from Norways’s Stabæk in January, has been a standout winter signing of the season, scoring 19 goals in 19 games, including five goals in six Europa Conference League matches. This marks the third time that the Nigerian striker has scored three or more goals in a single game for Gent, having previously scored four goals against Zulte Waregem on March 12 and the fastest hat-trick in European competition against Istanbul Basaksehir just three days later.
Bayern Munich & Borussia Dortmund Both Win
Bayern and Dortmund both picked up huge wins as they continued their fight for the Bundesliga title. The Bavarians picked up a 6-0 win over Schalke with Serge Gnabry scoring a brace while Dortmund beat Gladbach 5-2 while registering 34 shots on goal. One of Dortmund’s unsung hero in this run is 24-year-old Dutch forward, Donyell Malen. Since the 18th of March, only Erling Haaland (15) has had more goal contributions in Europe’s top 5 leagues than Malen (13) and many expect him to make a big money move to the Premier League in a few months.
Milan Lose Again, Get A Talking-To By Ultras
Milan’s struggles persisted this past weekend, as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Spezia. With the Rossoneri currently trailing the Top Four by four points and facing a 2-0 deficit to Inter in the Champions League, their hopes of returning to Europe’s elite club competition next season are rapidly diminishing. After the match, Milan’s players and coach were met by the Ultras, a group of supporters who held them accountable for a string of disappointing results. Despite the confrontational nature of the interaction, the fans also provided motivation ahead of the second leg against Inter.
Southampton Officially Relegated
The Saints 11-year stay in the Premier League ended over the weekend as they confirmed their relegation to the Championship following a 2-0 defeat to Fulham on Saturday – their 24th of the season and a Premier League high. They had been in the relegation zone since November 5th, and despite going through three different managers – Ralph Hasenhuttl, Nathan Jones, and Ruben Selles – they were unable to avoid the drop. In an effort to stave off relegation, the club made several signings during the January transfer window, including Kamaldeen Sulemana from Rennes for €25 million, Paul Onuachu from Genk for €18 million, and Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club for €13.7 million. The last time Southampton was relegated from the Premier League in 2005, it took them seven years to regain their top-flight status, during which they also suffered another relegation to League One.
Ian Garry Remains Undefeated In UFC
Ireland’s Ian Garry extended his unbeaten MMA record to 12-0-0 in the UFC with an impressive first-round knockout of Daniel Rodriguez. Garry had famously predicted his method of victory before the fight – a right high kick – and executed it perfectly, sending Rodriguez to the ground with 2 minutes and 15 seconds left in the first round before unleashing a flurry of punches on the helpless American. Garry, who clearly isn’t lacking confidence, called out another American right after the match – Neil Magny. The Irish fighter sees Magny as a worth next opponent and made his intentions clear: “I believe Neil Magny is the perfect opponent for me to go out there and smoke and show the world how good I am.”
Ada Hegerberg’s Double Leads Lyon To 10th French Women’s Cup
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, Ada Hegerberg, was the star of the show as her first half brace helped Lyon get a 2-1 win over PSG to secure the Coupe de France Feminine – their 10th overall. Her first goal was a vicious left foot strike from outside the box in the 12th minute, followed by a calm finish 11 minutes later for her brace. Although PSG’s Ramona Bachmann scored from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, Lyon held on for the win, despite receiving a red card in the late second half. The two teams will meet again this weekend in a Division 1 Feminine title decider. Lyon currently tops the table with 55 points, while PSG has 52 points. As they have a superior goal difference (+53 to +31), a draw is all that Lyon needs to retain the league title and complete the double.
Ja Morant Suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies
All-Star Point Guard, Ja Morant has been suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies following the emergence of yet another video of him flashing a gun in an Instagram Live Video. Two months ago, Morant was suspended for 8 games after he was seen waving a gun in a nightclub – a violation of the NBA Policy on carrying firearms. “Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in March after Morant’s suspension. “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him.” With a second offense this year, the league could hand the former Rookie of the Year a hefty fine and/or suspension.
Feyenoord Win Eredivisie Title
Feyenoord has won its 15th Dutch championship, with Arne Slot leading them to the title for the first time since the 2016/2017 season. The team’s impressive 12 consecutive league wins, including victories against Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, culminated in a 3-0 victory over Go Ahead Eagles. Slot had previously led Feyenoord to the UEFA Conference League final last season, but the team fell to AS Roma. Feyenoord have lost just one league game all season – a 4-3 loss to PSV in mid-September, a remarkable achievement by Slot who has now secured the first silverware of his managerial career.
