Manchester United Lifts Carabao Cup
The Red Devils ended their 6-year wait for a trophy with a 2-0 win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup at Wembley, courtesy two first half goals. Casemiro opened the scoring after he nodded home a Luke Shaw freekick and the Magpies never recovered after that. It was the Brazilian’s 17th final at club level and, remarkably, he’s won 16 of those. Shortly after, Marcus Rashford continued his red-hot form by doubling United’s lead from close range, thanks to a simple but perfectly weighted pass from loanee, Wout Weghorst. With his 25th goal of the season, Marcus Rashford helped seal the first trophy of the Erik ten Hag era, and the Dutchman will be hoping it’ll be the first of many.
Man United have won 15 of their 19 games since the World Cup, drawing 3 and losing just once. They’re back in action on Wednesday when they host West Ham in the FA Cup.
Time Up For Potter?
Chelsea’s poor run continued on Sunday with a 2-0 loss to Spurs; their 3rd in a row and their 6th in 11 games in 2023. Graham Potter’s side have won 1 game this year and have scored 4 times in those 11 games, with just 1 goal coming in the month of February. Hakim Ziyech escaped a first half red card for the Blues after a very bizarre change of mind by the referee/VAR, but that didn’t stop Spurs dominating the game. Oliver Skipp grabbed his first club goal with a 2nd half rocket of a shot before club captain, Harry Kane put the game beyond doubt from close range in the 82nd min. The Chelsea hierarchy has repeatedly assured Graham Potter of his job security, but after 10 losses and 7 draws in 26 games in charge of the Blues, you have to wonder if they’re reconsidering their decision to stand by him. Like the Chelsea manager said himself, “I haven’t done enough at this club to have too much good faith”.
Lionel Messi Scores 700th Club Goal, Kylian Mbappé Nets 200th PSG Goal
PSG revenged their Coupe de France exit with a 3-0 win at 2nd place Marseille as they extended their lead in Ligue 1 to 8pts. Kylian Mbappé reclaimed his lead as the league’s top scorer (17 goals) with a brace – his 199th and 200th in PSG colors – while reigning World Cup champion, Lionel Messi also got on the scoresheet to grab his 700th goal at club level (28 with PSG and 672 with Barcelona). The Argentine, who provided both assists for Mbappé’s brace, moves to #1 in Ligue 1’s assists chart with 12 for the season while teammate, Neymar is #2 with 11.
Napoli Goes 18 Points Clear in Serie A
Napoli’s 7th win in all competition and 3rd with a 2-0 scoreline helped extend their lead in the Serie A to 18 points, thanks in part to 2nd place Inter who lost at Bologna. Nigerian forward, Victor Osimhen was once again on target for the Neapolitan side, scoring for the 8th Serie A game in a row, the longest streak since Cristiano Ronaldo’s 11-game run for Juventus between December 2019 and February 2020. Osimhen (24 years) is the second-youngest player to achieve this in the three-points-for-a-win era, behind only Cagliari’s Roberto Muzzi (23 years) in 1995.
Milwaukee Bucks Go 14-Games Unbeaten
The 2021 Champions’ 104 – 101 over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday extended their winning streak to 14 games, the longest active streak in the NBA. With Giannis Antetokounmpo out with an injury and Kevin Durant still out for the Suns with an MCL sprain, both sides were missing their respective best players, yet, the Bucks showed their quality to hold off the visitors thanks to Jrue Holiday’s 33pts. The win maintains the Bucks’ 2nd position in the East as they trail the Boston Celtics by 0.5 games. The Celtics had claimed a dramatic 110-107 win in Philadelphia over the 76ers a day before.

Clippers & Kings Produce 2nd Highest Scoring NBA Game 351 Points
History was made in a double over-time game in Los Angeles between the Clippers and high-flying Sacramento Kings. Led by De’Aaron Fox’s 42 points and Malik Monk’s 45 pts off the bench, the Kings defeated the Clippers 176-175 as both teams recorded the 2nd highest scoring game in the league’s history with only Detroit Pistons’ 186-184 triple over-time win over Denver Nuggets in 1983 producing more points.
The Kings’ win – their 35th overall – moves them closer to ending their 16-year playoff drought as the remain 3rd in the Western Conference.
Dame Lillard Scores Career High 71 Points
The Portland Point Guard set a new career as he dropped 71 points in his team’s 131 – 114 win over the Rockets on Sunday. Dame Lillard came within 1 3pt shot of tying Klay Thompson’s game-record of 14, but finished with an impressive 13-22 from long range. Lillard’s 71 points ties Donovan Mitchell’s achievement on January 2nd against the Chicago Bulls, and is now the eighth-highest scoring performance in NBA history. Alongside Lillard and Mitchell, only David Robinson and Elgin Baylor have scored 71 points in a single game, and they’ve only been surpassed by the trio of Wilt Chamberlain (100, 78, 73, 73, 72), Kobe Bryant (81), and David Thompson (73). Lillard’s previous personal and franchise record was 61 points, which he achieved twice on January 20 and August 11, 2020, against the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks, respectively.
Brittney Griner Returns To Training 2-Months After Being Released From Russian Jail
Phoenix Mercury have re-signed three-time WNBA Champion, Brittney Griner, 2 months after her release from prison in Russia. The No. 1 overall pick by Phoenix in the 2013 WNBA Draft spent 10 months in jail following her detention and arrest on smuggling charges by Russian customs officials after cartridges containing less than a gram of medically prescribed hash oil were found in her luggage. Griner signed a one-year, $165,000 contract – a significant decrease from her previous salary – and is expected to be a key part of the Mercury ahead of the start of the new season in May.
Nigeria’s Terem Moffi Off The Mark For Nice
The Super Eagle finally got off the mark for his new club with a brace in OGC Nice’s 3-0 win at Monaco. Moffi – who also assisted Khephren Thuram for the 3rd goal – joined OGC Nice on loan from Lorient with an obligation to buy for around €30m had failed to score in his first 3 games despite his impressive performances but finally opened his account at the new club with two goals in the first half to take his season tally to 14 league goals – joint 3rd in France. He’s now scored more goals (7) against Monaco than he’s managed against any other club in his career. Nice’s current run of 4 league wins and a draw in 5 games is the best in Ligue and leaves them just 9pts from a Top 3 spot.
A Title Race In Germany?
Bayern Munich may have easily dispatched 3rd place Union Berlin 3-0 on Sunday, but only 5pts separates the table toppers from 5th place Freiburg. Though Bayern have won a record 10 Bundesliga titles in a row and are heavy favorites to retain it, they’re currently facing their toughest challenge in recent years. Level on points with Bayern is Dortmund who have won all 9 games in 2023 scoring 23 goals and conceding just 7. Dortmund were the last team to stop Bayern from winning the league when Jürgen Klopp led them to the title in 2011/12, and they’ll be hoping Edin Terzić can do just that.
Tommy Fury Defeats Jake Paul
Love Island star, Tommy Fury, claimed victory in a much-anticipated boxing match against social-media influencer Jake Paul on Sunday by split decision, which Paul described as a “humbling experience”. Despite Paul putting up a good fight and even knocking Fury down in the final round, the latter managed to outbox his opponent until the end. After the match, Fury stated, “This is my first main event. I will only get stronger, bigger, and better. If he wants a rematch, I am ready for it.”

March Madness refers to that time of year (usually mid-March through the beginning of April) when the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments are held. In the last Saturday before March Madness, we already got a glimpse of what is to come.
