Round-up of all the top football games
This weekend’s upcoming fixtures feature a mix of high-stakes matches in top European leagues and exciting cup clashes.
Tottenham and Liverpool are favorites to advance in the FA Cup, while Villarreal and Atletico Madrid will be looking to use their home advantage to derail the title hopes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.
In the Serie A, AC Milan will be looking to continue their strong form on Sunday and put some pressure on Napoli with a win against Jose Mourinho’s Roma side.
Finally, Manchester City and Arsenal are also favorites to advance in their respective FA Cup matches against Chelsea and Oxford United but will have to do that with their English Premier League title challenge at the forefront of their minds.
Tottenham vs Portsmouth
Tottenham’s win on Wednesday, featuring goals from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, means the North London side is back in form just in time for next Sunday’s North London Derby.
For tomorrow’s game against Portsmouth, they should be able to field a rotated side, allowing Antonio Conte to rest his established stars and give some of Tottenham’s fringe players a chance to get some game time.
Our prediction: With all respect to the former Premier League side, Tottenham should win this one pretty easily.
- Tottenham to win with a 0:1 handicap @ 1.38
- Over 2.5 goals in 90 minutes
Villarreal vs Real Madrid
Los Blancos will be looking to continue their recent run of good form by sinking the Yellow Submarines at the Estadio de la Ceramica for their third straight win since the 2022 World Cup ended.
As it stands, Madrid and FC Barcelona are level on points, so the Lilywhites need a win to keep the pressure on their eternal rivals.
Our prediction: Three points will not be easy to come by against a Villarreal side that has also won their last three games, but Madrid should have enough to get a much-needed win as they chase a 36th La Liga win.
- Away team to win/draw and over 1.5 goals @ 1.60.
- Madrid to win @ 2.08
Liverpool vs Wolves
A wildly inconsistent season continued as the Reds lost 3-1 away to Brentford on January 2. That result has put this fixture in a different light already.
Will Jurgen Klopp rest his starters and field a team of mostly second-string players against Portsmouth or, wary of defeat again, will he risk starting a full-strength team in a fixture Liverpool would ordinarily win easily?
Any indecision will play perfectly into the hands of the away side who now have former Chelsea striker, Diego Costa on their books. The Spanish striker is well-versed in the dark arts and if the away side manage to go ahead, is just the type of player who could entice the Liverpool players to lose their heads, especially without the dependable Virgil Van Dijk around.
Prediction: An early start should settle Liverpool nerves and lead them to an easy win against the EPL’s 19th-worst team. If the two teams go into the break level or with Liverpool behind, things could get ugly pretty quickly.
- Both teams to score @ 1.83
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.56
Manchester City vs Chelsea
Just three days after facing each other in the Premier League, the two opponents clash again in the FA Cup, with Manchester City heavily favored to win again after their 1-0 win on Thursday.
The major talking point for Chelsea ahead of Sunday’s game will be the number of first-team players out injured. Unlike Man City who will be without central defensive duo Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte, Chelsea will be without ten first team players, including Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic who went off injured early on Thursday.
Our prediction: Manchester City will rest several players with their title challenge in mind. This will give Chelsea a chance but the amount of missing first-team players for the London side means the home team should win this one anyway.
- Manchester City to win/draw and under 3.5 goals @ 1.66
- Both teams to score @ 1.88
AC Milan vs Roma
Over in Italy, “death, taxes, and a Napoli title meltdown” looks to be making a comeback as Napoli’s 1-0 Wednesday loss to Inter means the title hopes of the chasing pack has been reignited. Now that the door has been reopened, Milan will hope to keep the pressure on Napoli with a win to either close the gap or remain 5 points behind with a win against Roma.
The capital side beat Bologna last time out and will also be hoping to move up the table by beating Milan. World Cup winner, Paulo Dybala and Nicolo Zaniolo will be key if the capital side are to pull off an upset and help Napoli.
Our prediction: Rafael Leao is still one of the most dangerous forwards in the Serie A and will need special attention. We expect AC Milan to win this one but fail to keep a clean sheet in the process.
- Both teams to score @ 1.83
- Home team to win or over 2.5 goals @ 1.41
- AC Milan to win, over 2.5 goals & at least 10 corners @ 5.10
Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona
Over in Spain, 4th placed Atletico hosts 1st placed Barcelona hoping for a win to climb into the top 3 and back into title contention. This fixture has decided past La Liga title runs in the past and Diego Simeone will be hoping to remain relevant at the top end of the table; Barcelona will have to fight for every ball here as usual.
The home side will be buoyed by the return to form of star forward, Antoine Griezmann at the just concluded World Cup and will be hoping he inspires this team back to old heights.
Brcelona, on the other hand, will be counting on their star-studded attacking lineup to come away with victory at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Ousmane Dembele, Memphis Depay and Raphinha are expected to start on Sunday since Robert Lewandowski’s suspension means he misses the game.
Our prediction: A high-scoring game. Barcelona will always attack and playing at home means Atletico will try to go for the win.
- Barcelona to win/draw and over 1.5 goals @ 1.76
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.89
- Barcelona to win or over 2.5 goals @ 1.45
Oxford Utd vs Arsenal
With odds of 1.19 to win, Arsenal are the clear favorites to win their round 3 FA Cup fixture against League one side, Oxford United.
The Gunners’ attempts to bring in Shakhtar Donetsk forward, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Atletico’s Joao Felix shows that they recognize their need for more attacking options.
After a slightly disappointing 0-0 result against Newcastle, this fixture will be treated as a chance to give some backup players a chance to shine and for tired legs to get some rest ahead of the North London Derby.
Our prediction: Arsenal to win this one pretty easily.
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.38
- Gabriel Martinelli to score and Arsenal to win @ 2.40
- Over 2.5 goals, both teams to score & 9+ corners @3.20
