Morocco continued their fairytale run at the World Cup by overcoming Portugal in the quarter-finals to become the first African country to go beyond the quarter-finals at the World Cup, in their way is France who despite missing some key players, are two matches away from defending the title they won four years ago.

Form Guide

The defending champions have shaken off any talk of a holder’s curse, and have continued their quest to retain the title. However, France have not managed a clean sheet in any match they have played at this World Cup. Against England, they conceded two penalties and were fortunate Harry Kane missed the second chance he got from the spot.

They have been solid going forward, Kylian Mbappe is the tournament’s highest goal-scorer with five goals and  has had Oliver Giroud providing good support, with the AC Milan man continuing to be the man for the big occasion with his goal against England pushing him even further as France’s men’s highest goalscorer.

In sharp contrast to France, Morocco have conceded only once all tournament, and are yet to concede a goal from an opposing player.

They will play without fear having already beaten Belgium, Spain and Portugal at this tournament.

Alongside Croatia, they are the only team at the World Cup yet to taste defeat and will be a true test for France with their tireless running and huge support of the Arab fans in Qatar. In midfield  Sofyan Amrabat and  Azzedine Ounahi have been combative and dogged, making sure the opposing midfielders do not get to stamp their authority on the game.

Team News

France have no player missing due to injury or suspension and should be an unchanged side from the one that played against England.

Joules Kounde should continue at right-back while Antione Griezman continues to impress in the midfield role. Much was made about nullifying Mbappe’s threat, but the French have shown that they can get goals from the midfield too, so far, Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni have chipped in with one goal each.

Potential France starting XI: Lloris; Kounde, Varane, Upamecano, T. Hernandez; Tchouameni, Rabiot; Dembele, Griezmann, Mbappe; Giroud

Defenders Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui missed the quarter-finals due to injury and fight to be fit enough to feature against France. Romain Saiss is also an injury doubt after being substituted on Saturday.

Striker Walid Cheddira received two yellow cards in quick succession against Portugal and will be suspended for the semi-final, but is unlikely to change Walid Regragui’s starting XI with Youseff En-Nesyri the preferred point of attack.

Potential Morocco starting XI:  Bounou; Hakimi, Aguerd, El Yamiq, Mazraoui; Ounahi, Amrabat, Amallah; Ziyech, En-Nesyri, Boufal.

Morocco have already made history by getting this far, they will play a low block against France and look to hit them on the counter-attack. However, they will have a harder time dealing with Giroud’s hold-up play and will have to find a way to handle Mbappe’s pace with their makeshift defence.

France know they are on the cusp of another final but will be aware of Morocco’s resolute defence. They are fortunate to have Antione Griezmann performing at such a high level at this World Cup, Griezmann has been vital for Les Bleus and provided both assists in the win over England.

While Morocco will have most of the support at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday, France are still favourites to go through to the finals, especially with the energy-sapping knockout matches Morocco have had to come through to get to this far and the array of attacking talent Les Blues have.

Bet on

With only four matches left in this World Cup, the excitement is at fever pitch. The subplots remain interesting, will we see Lionel Messi lift the World Cup or will Luka Modric crash his hopes?

Will Morocco make history or will France go all the way to a successive World Cup final?
