Europa League Action First Week of November 2022
The next round of the Europa League and the Europa Conference League is up for grabs for some teams on Thursday, with some groups going down to the wire.
Eight third-placed teams from the Champions League drop down to play a Europa League playoff round, this is much reason for a first-place finish which avoids an extra round of matches.
While the eight group winners in the ECL automatically go through to the last 16, with the eight group runners-up drawn against third-ranked teams from the UEFA Europa League groups.
Arsenal vs Fc Zurich and Bodo/Glimt vs PSV
The incentive for Arsenal and PSV to win the group isn’t just bragging rights, they get to skip a knockout play-off round tie against a third-placed Champions League team like Barcelona, Sevilla or Ajax and avoid playing two extra games in the new year.
A victory over FC Zurich for the Gunners will mean they top the group regardless of results elsewhere, while PSV have to beat Bodo/Glimt and hope Arsenal slip up.
Arsenal have a two-point advantage over PSV heading into the final matchday they simply need to match or better PSV’s result. They play in front of a boisterous Emirates where they have won their last 11 competitive matches and last five European fixtures. PSV travel to Bodo/Glimt to play on an artificial turf that could be their undoing on a night where they need a victory against a Bodo side looking to ensure they play in the Europa Conference League with a third-place finish in Group A.
Fourth-placed FC Zurich could still make it into the Europa Conference League if they upset Arsenal at the Emirates and Bodo/Glimt lose to PSV. A draw could also be enough, but Zurich would then need PSV to win by at least six goals at the Aspmyra Stadion.
Expect Mikel Arteta to rotate his team with a trip to Stamford Bridge on the horizon, they should be able to squeeze out a narrow win regardless, especially with the advantage of playing in front of their home fans. PSV have the tougher fixture in Norway and will be looking to avoid a result like they had the last time they played Bodo/Glimt.
Bet On:
- Arsenal to win @ 1.16
- Arsenal vs Zurich Under 2.5 goals @ 3.35
- Arsenal vs Zurich Over 7,5 corners @ 1.25
- PSV to win @ 2.10
- PSV vs Bodo under 2.5 goals @ 2.40
Dynamo Kiev vs Fenerbahce and Rennes vs AEK Larnaca
Fenerbahce and Rennes both sit on 11 points to top group B with Fenerbahce holding a slender goal difference advantage over the Ligue 1 side. Dynamo Kiev are already out, while Fenerbahce are looking to ensure the top spot in Group B is theirs.
Fenerbahce will be confident of taking care of business against Dynamo, they have lost just once in all competitions since their defeat to Dynamo back in July. Dynamo, on the other hand, have been struggling, they got only their first win in five games against Kryvbas at the weekend, and are currently 13 points behind Ukrainian league leaders Dnipro-1.
With Enner Valencia and Michy Batshuayi leading the line, Fenerbahce have scored 34 goals in 11 matches in the Turkish Super Lig and 11 goals in 5 Europa League matches. They need to match or better Rennes’ result to win the group and avoid the extra preliminary knockout round, with Rennes playing at home to AEK Larnaca, Fenerbahce need to get a win at Olimpiyskiy National to make sure that top spot is theirs.
Rennes will be confident of a result when they host AEK Larnaca, they are unbeaten in seven successive European home fixtures, while AEK have only one win in group B thanks to a 1-0 win away at Dynamo Kiev.
Both Fenerbahce and Rennes look poised to get wins this matchday with Fenerbahce securing the top spot in the group.
Bet on:
- Fenerbahce to win @ 1.87
- Fenerbahce vs Dynamo under 2.5 goals @ 2.05
- Dynamo to score under 1.5 goals @ 1.37
- Rennes to win @ 1.18
- Rennes vs AEK over 2.5 @ 1.40
Real Betis vs HJK Helsinki and Roma vs Ludogorets
Roma host Ludogorets Razgrad on Thursday knowing they secure the second spot if they avoid defeat to the Bulgarians. Ludogorets’ 2-1 in Bulgaria on the opening day gives them the advantage over Roma with both sides level on points, a Roma win puts the Italians above them, relegating Ludogorets to the Conference League.
Real Betis meanwhile are looking to finish the group stage unbeaten when they welcome HJK Helsinki to the Estadio Benito Villamarin. HJK will finish bottom of the group regardless of the matches’ outcome but will be aiming to get their first win in the Europa league.
With eyes on a La Liga clash against Sevilla by the weekend, Manuel Pellegrini will likely rest key players for this fixture but should be able to win comfortably against HJK.
Jose Mourinho should be confident his side will get the victory on Thursday at the Stadio Olimpico, Ludogorets haven’t won away in 11 Europa League matches and have not kept a clean sheet in that run.
Bet on:
- Betis to win @ 1.26
- One or none of Betis and HJK to score @ 1.68
- Roma to win @ 1.30
- Roma v Ludogorets over 2.5 @ 1.58
Union SG vs Union Berlin and Braga vs Malmo
Only second place is up for grabs in Group D on the final group stage match day. Union SG have already won the group, while Malmo will finish bottom of the group. Union Berlin and Braga however still have it all to play for as they both make the push to secure a spot in the second round of the Europa League.
Union SG’s first-ever major European adventure has been a success so far, winning 4 matches and drawing 1 to take 13 points from their five matches. Union Berlin have to win in Belgium against Union SG to be guaranteed a spot in the second round. The Bundesliga leaders lead third-placed Braga by two points, with an identical head-to-head record which means they have to match or better Braga’s result to hold onto their second place.
Braga are expected to beat Malmo whose elimination from Europe has already been sealed after losing all five matches played in the group.
Bet on:
- Braga to win @ 1.28
- Over 3.5 goals @ 2.40
- Union Berlin to win @ 1.95
- Union SG vs Union Berlin under 3.5 goals @ 1.33
Real Sociedad vs Manchester United and Sheriff Tiraspol vs Omonoia
Manchester United can leapfrog Real Sociedad for top spot in Group E when they play at the Anoeta Stadium on Thursday night, Sociedad hold a three-point lead over Manchester United and will get the top spot if they avoid defeat to the Red Devils.
Real Sociedad have been perfect in the Europa League this season, winning all 5 matches so far while handing Manchester United their only defeat so far. United will look to get revenge for that slender 1-0 defeat, and responded brilliantly after that setback to pick up 4 successive wins.
Both Sheriff Tiraspol and Omonia have failed to make it to the knockout stage, but Sheriff need to avoid a three-goal margin loss to ensure they drop to the Europa Conference League.
Sheriff have only three points in the Europa League this season, while Omonoia have zero points despite losing by slim margins to both Manchester United and Real Sociedad. Sheriff beat Omonoia comfortably in Cyprus, and they should be able to produce a repeat result to ensure they finish in third place.
Real Sociedad head into the game against United on the back of poor domestic results and could be upset by a Manchester United team that has been defensively solid in recent matches.
Bet on:
- Manchester United to win @ 2.25
- Under 2.5 goals @ 1.90
- Sheriff to win @ 1.92
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.97
Feyenoord vs Lazio and FC Midtjylland vs. Sturm Graz
There is still all to play for in Group F, with all four teams still with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage. FC Midtjylland host Sturm Graz, while Lazio head to Holland to take on Feyenoord.
Midtjylland will secure a place in the knockout stage with a win while Sturm Graz only need to avoid a defeat to move on to the next round.
Feyenoord also have a must-win match when they host group leaders Lazio. The Dutch side will be assured of a top-two finish in the group with a victory by two goals or more – or if they win and Sturm Graz lose. Meanwhile, Lazio only need to avoid defeat to go through.
Lazio have to keep things tight at the back against a Feyenoord side that will look to start the game on the front foot, while Lazio could be distracted ahead of Sunday’s Derby against Roma.
Sturm Graz should be able to hold on for the point they need to get them through to the next round. Midtjylland will attack all out and could be vulnerable to the counterattack
Bet on:
- Sturm Graz win or draw @ 1.80
- Over 1.5 goals @ 1.26
- Feyenoord to win @ 2.25
- Feyenoord to win or draw @ 1.36
Qarabag vs Freiburg and Olympiacos vs. Nantes
Nantes need a victory in their final match of the Europa League group stage at the Karaiskakis Stadium against Olympiacos to stand any chance of advancing into the knockout round.
Olympiacos have only two points from five matches condemning the Greek side to the bottom of the group with no chance of making a Europa Conference League appearance even if they beat third-placed Nantes.
Just one point separates Nantes and Qarabag who are battling for second place in Group G in the group.
Qarabag FK host Freiburg who will finish winners of the group regardless of events Thursday night. Qurban Qurbanov’s side need to match or better Nantes’ result to secure their place in the knockout round. Freiburg have nothing to play for and will likely rest most first-team regulars, giving Qarabag a chance of getting all three points.
Nantes might struggle to break down an Olympiacos team that will be looking to avoid defeat in front of their fans meaning it will be a long night for two teams that have struggled to score in this year’s Europa competition.
Bet on:
- Qarabag win @ 1.95
- Under 2.5 goals @ 2.00
- Nantes win or draw @ 1.30
- Nantes and Olympiacos draw @ 3.55
Trabzonspor vs. Ferencvaros and Monaco vs. Red Star Belgrade
While Ferencvaros have already qualified for the next round, they know they can be upstaged by Monaco for first place in the group as they head to Turkey to face Trabzonspor.
Monaco, Trabzonspor and Red Star could still qualify for the next round with only 1 point separating the three teams. A Monaco victory will give them their first consecutive home wins in Europe since the 2016-17 Champions League campaign and they come into the clash on the back of a four-match unbeaten run at home.
Ferencvaros have nothing to play for in this game and are likely to field a weakened team against a Trabzonspor side that have been solid at home and will be looking to win by a large margin to improve their chances of making it to the next stage.
Bet on:
- Trabzonspor win @ 1.55
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.70
- Monaco win @ 1.65
- Under 2.5 goals @ 2.25
Istanbul Basaksehir vs. Hearts and Rigas Futbola Skola vs. Fiorentina
Both Istanbul and Fiorentina have secured their place in the next round, but there is still the need to decide who finishes top of the group as both teams have 10 points each heading into matchday 6.
Fiorentina should make light work of RFS who are competing in their first-ever European group-stage campaign and are one of six teams yet to win a match in their first five Europa Conference League matches this season.
Istanbul have lost three of their last six matches in all competitions, but seem to be on the mend with a 3-1 triumph over Giresunspor on Monday moving them to second on the Super Lig table.
They should be able to continue the momentum with a comfortable win against Hearts expected on Thursday.
Bet on:
- Istanbul win @ 1.28
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.50
- Istanbul win or draw @ 1.03
- Fiorentina to win @ 1.32
- Under 2.5 @ 2.25
- Over 8.5 corners @ 1.40
FCSB vs West Ham and Silkeborg vs. Anderlecht
Only West Ham’s 100% record is at stake when they travel to Romania to play FCSB, while Silkeborg and Anderlecht have it all to play for when they face off in Denmark on Thursday night.
Silkeborg are currently one point ahead of Anderlecht ahead of their Group B clash and know a win will be enough for them to finish second. Anderlecht have had a tough run of results and go into the clash needing a win that will see them move up to second place. They will be boosted by their 4-2 win over Eupen over the weekend but will find it difficult in Denmark against an opponent they beat by a slim margin in the reverse fixture.
West Ham go into Thursday’s match FCSB after a narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester United in the Premier League and will not want to make it 2 losses in as many games.
Bet on:
- FSCB and West Ham draw @ 4.25
- Under 2.5 goals @ 2.10
- Both teams score @ 1.77
- Silkeborg – Anderlecht both teams score @ 1.60
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.80
Lech Poznan vs. Villarreal and Hapoel Be’er Sheva vs. Austria Vienna
Villarreal will likely travel to Poland with an under-strength side knowing a loss will not change their position at the top of the group. Lech Poznan have proven to be a tough team to beat in the Europa Conference League, stumbling only against Villarreal who defeated them 4-3 in the opening match of the group, they know a win will secure a second-place finish and are primed to get that win but should be wary of a reaction from a Villarreal team that will be playing under new manager Quique Setien for the first time on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Hapoel Be’er Sheva will be fighting for a place in the playoff round when they host Austria Vienna in their final group stage match.
Hapoel are two points behind Lech Poznan, they need a win over Vienna and a Lech Poznan slip-up to make it into the next round, Austria Vienna are guaranteed to finish bottom of the group after managing only two points from a possible 15.
Bet on:
- Lech Poznan to win @ 3.00
- Lech Poznan win or draw @ 1.55
- Both sides score @ 1.65
- Hapoel to win @ 1.65
FC Koln vs. Nice and Partizan vs. FC Slovacko
Nice and Partizan are tied on 8 points while Koln is only a point behind, with all three teams in contention for qualification going into the final round of group matches, Slovacko cannot qualify for the next round but could still finish third in the group if they defeat Partizan by a handsome margin and Koln lose to Nice.
Partizan have been excellent in the Serbian league and maintained their great run of results with a thumping 4-0 home victory over Radnicki Nis on Sunday. They should once again rely on that home support for a victory against Slovacko on Thursday.
Elsewhere, FC Koln have to beat Nice if they are to advance to the knockout stages, while Nice will advance with a draw and will be assured of the top spot with a win. Nice have improved in recent weeks and travel to Germany following a 2-1 over Lorient that moved them into the top half of the table.
Bet on:
- Nice to win @ 3.60
- Both Nice and Koln to score @ 1.60
- Partizan to win @ 1.63
- Under 2.5 goals @ 2.05
AZ Alkmaar vs. Dnipro-1 and Apollon Limassol vs. Vaduz
With the top two teams already decided, Dnipro-1 and AZ Alkmaar will play for top spot in Thursday’s Group E contest. Dnipro-1 travel to Holland to face AZ Alkmaar with two points between them.
AZ Alkmaar need only a draw to secure top spot with a two-point lead at the top of the group standings, and head into the midweek contest confident of securing the point needed to cement their place in the knockout stages.
A Dnipro-1 win will see them win the group and avoid the playoff round against third-placed Europa League teams. However, they have a tall order against an AZ Alkmaar team that comes into the midweek fixture unbeaten in nine of their 10 home games across all competitions this season.
The Ukrainian side have a decent run of theirs and head into Thursday’s clash on a run of three wins from their last four Europa Conference League matches since their opening-day loss against AZ Alkmaar.
Apollon Limassol host Vaduz with both teams unable to qualify for the knockout stages after defeats last week. Apollon will be eager to finish their European adventure with at least a third-place finish and should be able to do just that in front of their home fans.
Bet on:
- AZ Alkmaar win or draw @ 1.05
- Over 8.5 corners @ 1.92
- Apollon to win @ 1.65
- Over 1.5 goals @ 1.24
Gent vs Molde and Djurgardens vs Shamrock Rovers
Molde are in second in Group F with one game to go and have to avoid a loss to Gent in Belgium to advance through to the playoff round.
Djurgardens IF play a dead-rubber contest with Shamrock Rovers having already won the group and secured a place in the last 16.
Shamrock have 2 points from 5 matches and will finish bottom of the group regardless of their result on Thursday. Djurgardens will likely make wholesale changes to the starting lineup with the top spot already secured, but should still play well enough to get the win in Sweden.
Molde require just a draw to advance to the next round but need to ensure they don’t lose to a Gent side that will be playing in front of their fans. Molde have won eight of their last nine games across competitions, and have to avoid defeat against a Gent side that have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their previous home wins in the Conference League.
Bet on:
- Djurgardens win @ 1.38
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.60
- Gent win @ 2.00
- Both teams score @ 1.58
Slavia Prague vs. Sivasspor and CFR Cluj vs. KF Ballkani
Slavia are level on seven points with CFR Cluj, and if both those teams win on Matchday 6, all the top three sides in the group would have ten points, with Slavia missing out on qualification. Slavia must win and hope Ballkani take at least a point off Cluj in Romania.
Sivasspor have 10 points from five games and are currently top of the group. They will secure direct entry into the round of 16 with a victory in their final group fixture. Slavia Prague go into the game as the stronger side based on their form but will be wary of Sivasspor who have won both their away games in the Conference League this season – a 1-0 defeat of CFR Cluj followed by a 2-1 win over Ballkani.
CFR Cluj host already eliminated Ballkani knowing they can no longer finish top of the group but they will qualify for the playoff round of the competition if they defeat Ballkani. Cluj will be aware Ballkani have not lost in their last four away matches, winning and drawing twice.
Bet on:
- Sivasspor win or draw @ 2.90
- Both teams score @ 1.95
- Cluj win @ 1.45
- Under 2.5 goals @ 2.25
FK Zalgiris vs. Slovan Bratislava and FC Pyunik vs. Basel
Two spots are still up for grabs in Group H, with first place and fourth only separated by 3 points. Pyunik will host Basel, while FK Zalgiris host Slovan Bratislava.
Despite sitting bottom of the group, FK Zalgiris could still make it to the next round with a win by at least two goals against Bratislava, while hoping Basel and Pyunik play out a draw.
Zalgiris have only won a single game in the Europa Conference League so far this season which came against Pyunik. They have won four of their last home matches, drawing one game. Zalgiris have scored a total of 13 goals in their last five home matches, conceding four times and should be able to eke out a narrow win against Slovan.
Pyunik and Basel met for the first time in September at St. Jakob-Park, which Basel won 3-1. Pyunik have scored only one goal in four of their last five outings across competitions, with the matches decided by one-goal margins. The trend is likely to continue with Pyunik winning a low-scoring affair.
Bet on:
- Zalgris win or draw @ 1.58
- Over 8.5 corners @ 1.40
- Pyunik win or draw @ 1.93
- Under 2.5 goals @ 2.05
