Real Madrid vs Girona
Real Madrid will be chasing their fifth straight La Liga win when they play Girona at the Bernabeu on Sunday afternoon.
Carlo Ancelotti’s team suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down 3-2 to Leipzig in the Champions League but remain unbeaten in the Spanish league, dropping points only once in 11 matches played.
Last time out, they won 3-1 against Sevilla with the result ensuring they maintained their 3-point lead over Barcelona to remain top of the table. That victory over Sevilla made it four successive La Liga wins for Madrid who have not lost in the league since their 1-0 Madrid Derby loss to Atletico Madrid in May 2022.
Federico Valverde and Karim Benzema were both rested for the clash against Leipzig and could feature against Girona on Sunday. Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos and Mariano Diaz are expected to be available for the clash.
Real Madrid should show a response after losing their first match of the season and should be dominant against a Girona side that is winless in 6 of their last 6 matches sitting two places off the bottom of the league.
While Girona have lost three of their last four matches against Real Madrid, they pulled off a surprise 2-1 victory the last time the sides met. Madrid will remember this and will be seeking revenge for that defeat.
Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest
In the battle of first against last, Arsenal host Nottingham Forest as the Gunners try to avoid a third successive game without a win. Arsenal’s flying start to the season might finally be catching up to them; the Gunners lost in the Europa League for the first time this season when PSV beat them 2-0 on Thursday and had only managed a 1-1 draw against Southampton in their last league match.
They have slowed down recently, scoring only four goals in their last four matches and haven’t scored more than once in a match since putting 3 past Liverpool on October 9th.
Nottingham travel to London on the back of just their second win of the season, pulling off a surprising 1-0 victory over Liverpool, thanks to former Liverpool player Taiwo Awoniyi’s second-half goal.
However, Arteta’s men head into Sunday’s game on a 10-game winning streak at the Emirates in all competitions – including each of their last eight in the Premier League – but they have failed to keep a clean sheet at home this season.
Ahead of their first-ever visit to the league match at the Emirates, Nottingham have conceded only two goals in their last four games, but have managed just two away wins all season.
They should be boosted by their Liverpool win to take on a tired Arsenal side who might be dealing with more injuries as Gabriel Magalhaes appeared to have picked up a knock in the PSV match, possibly adding to a list of injured players that includes Mohammed Elneny, Emile Smith-Rowe, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Matt Turner.
Mikel Arteta will have to motivate his team to raise their level of performance if they are going to keep up the impressive run they have had so far.
Real Sociedad vs Real Betis
Only two points separate Real Sociedad and Real Betis as they both chase a Champions League spot in La Liga, Real Sociedad sit in fourth while Real Betis are fifth ahead of their clash on Sunday evening at the Reale Arena.
Real Sociedad had been on a run of four straight wins before their 1-0 loss to Valladolid last week, they have also won nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions and they go into the match following a 2-0 victory over Omonoia in the Europa League to make it five wins from five matches in the competition.
Real Betis, meanwhile, also won their Europa League match on Thursday, beating Ludogorets 1-0 thanks to a Nabil Fekir goal.
While Sociedad has been in imperious form lately, Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis side has struggled lately winning only one of their last four in the league, slipping down to fifth in the league.
There isn’t much between the sides, but Real Sociedad’s recent form gives them the edge in a contest between two teams in the mix for a top-four La Liga finish.
Lazio vs Salernitana
Lazio’s win over Atalanta not only made it five wins from six in Serie A for them but also handed Atalanta their first loss of the season and moved Lazio into third on the table, above Atalanta on goal difference.
On Sunday, Lazio host Salernitana at the Stadio Olimpico as they continue to put pressure on Milan and Napoli.
Salernitana have lost three of their last five matches and arrive with both form and history against them in this fixture. Salernitana have also lost all of their three previous away games against Lazio in Serie A, conceding at least three goals on each occasion.
Salernitana have scored only three goals away from home this season, and are pitted against a Lazio defence that has conceded only 5 goals this season and have the league’s best goal difference.
Even though Salernitana have won two of their last three matches, those wins have come against Spezia and Verona, losing to Inter Milan, against a much more ruthless Lazio attack, the odds are stacked against them.
Manchester United vs West Ham
Manchester United have a potentially tricky game against West Ham to navigate on Sunday as they continue their chase for a top-four finish. United are only 3 points off third place, sitting in sixth place on the Premier League table but can not afford to falter in their pursuit of the teams above them.
West Ham have largely blown hot and cold this season, losing half of the 12 matches they have played. However, David Moyes will have a personal axe to grind with his former employers and arrives at Old Trafford following a 2-0 win over Bournemouth in their last league match, a win which propelled them into the top half of the table.
His side will have a tougher test against Manchester United who are beginning to form a new identity under new manager Erik Ten Hag. They scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Chelsea to take a point at Stamford Bridge and are unbeaten at home since their opening weekend loss to Brighton.
Ten Hag rang the changes against Sheriff in the Europa league and should have a fresh squad to take on a West Ham side that were also in action in Europe on Thursday. David Moyes has struggled against the top six and is unlikely to get a win against a United team West Ham have failed to beat in their last five attempts and have only won 7 times in 52 meetings between them.
Union Berlin vs Borussia Mönchengladbach
Union Berlin saw their lead at the summit of the Bundesliga cut to one point after a surprise 2-1 defeat to Bochum last weekend. They however followed that up with a 1-0 UEFA Europa League triumph over Braga and now turn their attention to the Bundesliga when they host Monchengladbach on Sunday.
Urs Fischer’s side are on an 11-game unbeaten league run at home winning eight and drawing three and have won their last five matches home games without conceding.
Union will be wary of Gladbach striker Marcus Thuram though, with the Frenchman scoring five goals in his last four Bundesliga appearances. He has also enjoyed playing against Union, previously scoring three goals against them
Last season, Union Berlin beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 at home and in the reverse fixture.
Gladbach have struggled on their travels so far, and are yet to win away from home this season, they are unlikely to get their first win in Berlin on Sunday
