Weekend Football preview:  Southampton vs Arsenal – Tottenham vs Newcastle – Barcelona vs Athletic Club – Roma vs Napoli and more

Southampton vs Arsenal

Southampton host the league leaders Arsenal on Sunday with a little less pressure on them after getting a crucial win against fellow south coast team, Bournemouth mid-week.

Arsenal were also in action during the week, they played their rescheduled Europa League fixture against PSV at the Emirates on Thursday, winning by a slender 1-0 score and will be relieved all the players featured came through unscathed.

Arsenal will arrive at the south coast to play a team that seems to be turning the corner after picking up only 1 point in four games before their win at Bournemouth. That win will definitely have eased some of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s worries ahead of the game against Arsenal, but he will also be aware of how damaging a big loss could be to his team’s morale.

Mikel Arteta’s team looked tired in the second half against Leeds last week and were lucky to leave Elland Road with all three points, with a Europa  League match on Thursday, it remains to be seen how much recovery his players will have made before this clash. Southampton will be looking to take advantage of any lethargy on the side of the Gunners early on.

Arsenal are the best away side in the Premier League this season. They have accumulated 12 points from their first five away games, two more than Manchester City and will rightly be favorites here against a Southampton side with the worst home record in the division.

Manchester City’s 3-1 win today leaves Pep Guardiola’s side just a point behind the Gunners. They’ll be looking to extend that lead to four points again on Sunday.

Our Picks

Arsenal to win @ 1.60

Under 2.5 goals @ 2.20

Arsenal to win/draw and over 1.5 goals @ 1.42

Tottenham vs Newcastle

Tottenham were thoroughly outplayed at Old Trafford mid-week and will welcome the familiar surroundings of North London as they welcome a Newcastle side that is pushing for a Champions League spot.

Antonio Conte will want a reaction from his side after a limp display against Manchester United. Tottenham are currently third on the table with 23 points from 11 games but could be further behind Manchester City by the time they play Newcastle on Sunday.

Richarlison isn’t expected to take part in the fixture after he sustained a calf injury against Everton last weekend. Dejan Kulusevski is likely to be unavailable too due to a muscle injury.

Spurs cannot afford to lose more ground, it will not be surprising if Conte opts for a more adventurous strategy rather than sticking with his 3-5-2 system which has not succeeded against more attacking sides.

Newcastle are missing some of their first choice attackers; Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin are out, but Callum Wilson is expected to be available for the trip. They will still pose an adequate threat against Tottenham, Kieran Trippier is always dangerous in set piece situations, while Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson have 8 goals between them and will be looking to test that Spurs backline.

Our Picks

Over 2.5 goals @ 1.87

Both teams to score @ 1.68

Newcastle to win with a 0:1 handicap @ 1.70

Aston Villa vs Brentford

This weekend, Aston Villa host Brentford in their first match since Steven Gerrard’s sacking. The management and the former Rangers Boss and Liverpool legend parted ways after Villa’s loss to Fulham on Thursday.

First-team coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the team for what is a must-win game for Aston Villa who host a Brentford side coming off a respectable draw against Chelsea.

Brentford could have gotten more than a point from Chelsea’s visit if not for Kepa Arrizabalaga’s saves in the first half. The Bees have accumulated 14 points from 11 games and sit in the top half of the table. However, they are yet to win away from home this season, picking up only 3 points from the 5 away matches they have played.

Aston Villa will hope for a response to Gerrard’s sacking as they sit just above the relegation zone with only two wins this season and just 2 points earned in October, a poor result this weekend could plunge them into the bottom three.

Our Picks

Aston Villa win @ 2.15

Under 2.5 goals @ 1.87

Home team to win Either half @ 1.60

Barcelona vs Athletic Club

Athletic Club head to the Nou camp needing to stop a run of three matches without a win at a Stadium where they conceded 4 goals with no reply the last time they visited.

Barcelona needed to bounce back from their loss to Real Madrid and produced an efficient performance against Villareal during the week. They will want to keep the momentum going even though they will have more of their attention on the must-win clash against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The distraction of the Champions League could be to Athletic’s advantage when they play Barcelona. However, a slip up is unlikely as Barcelona have steamrolled teams not named Real Madrid in the La Liga. Other than an opening weekend draw with Rayo Vallecano and the El Classico loss, Barca have won every La Liga match they have played this season.

Our Picks

Over 2.5 goals @ 1.87

Barcelona to score first @ 1.45

Bet on Barcelona to win @ 1.55

Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid

Two teams in La Liga’s top five clash at Estadio Benito Villamarín with both Real Betis and Atletico Madrid needing a win after only managing draws last time out.

Real Betis and Atletico Madrid are 5th and 4th respectively, both with 20 points from 10 La Liga games with Atletico holding the slight advantage on goal difference.

Former Atletico player, Radamel Falcao returned to haunt his former employers in the last matchday by converting a 92nd minute penalty to cancel out Alvaro Morata’s goal. Real Betis also struggled to find a way past lowly-placed Cadiz with the contest ending in a goalless draw.

Real Betis have won 6 games this season, with five of those victories coming when playing at home, conceding only twice while scoring ten goals.

The visit of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid will be a true test of Betis’ Champions League qualification ambitions which they should come through victorious.

Our Picks

Real Betis to win/draw @ 1.55

Under 2.5 goals @ 1.70

Both teams to score @ 1.88

Roma vs Napoli

Napoli are flying this season! Napoli lead the Serie A and are favourites to beat Jose Mourinho’s side as they look to continue their unbeaten league run, but could have their bubble burst when they visit a Roma team that has blown hot and cold this season.

Napoli are top of the table with 26 points after winning 8 of their 10 games this season while Roma are fourth with 22 points after winning 1-0 against Sampdoria last time out and are only 4 points behind the league leaders.

Goal scoring has been Roma’s bane this season, scoring the fewest goals out of the teams in Italy’s top 6. Unfortunately, they will be without their top goal scorer, Paulo Dybala who hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury in their 2-1 home win over Lecce.

The Neapolitans are rightfully tipped to win this fixture, they fortunately have Victor Osimhen and Irving Lozano both back from injury. Luciano Spalletti’s concern will be at the back where they haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet in their last six games in all competitions – as they play a  Roma side that has not failed to score in their last five matches.

Our Picks

Napoli to win @ 2.45

Both teams to score @ 1.62

Over 2.5 goals @ 1.80

Atalanta vs Lazio

Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio will also be without three-time Serie A top scorer, Ciro Immobile when they travel to second-placed Atalanta on Sunday.

Like league leaders Napoli, Atalanta are also on a 10-match unbeaten run from the start of the season, even though Gian Piero Gasperini has been quick to say his side are not in the running for the Serie A title.

Lazio have also been having a good Serie A season, their only loss so far coming against Napoli. However, they might struggle to find the goals in the absence of Ciro Immobile who will be unavailable till after the World Cup break.

Adopting a more defensive gameplan is likely from Maurizio Sarri due to Immobile’s absence, but they will still be the underdogs in Sunday’s trip to Atalanta. Expect a high-scoring game.

Our Picks

Atalanta to win @ 2.00

Over 2.5 goals @ 1.73

Over 1.5 goals @ 1.24

Lille vs Monaco

Monaco travel to Lille hoping to banish the memories of their frustrating 1-1 draw with Clermont Foot 63 after having to play most of the match with just 10 men. The task for the Monaco defense will be keeping Jonathan David from scoring after the Canadian tallied 9 goals in his last 11 Ligue 1 outings.

Lille on the other hand, know that a win against Monaco will see them leapfrog the municipality side and will be looking to make it their third win in as many matches.

Paulo Fonseca’s team put three goals past Strasbourg 3-0 last time out. However, they will be missing Jose Fonte and Benjamin Andre – who are both serving yellow card suspensions. Bafode Diakite and Angel Gomes are billed to return from suspension with Diakite filling in for the suspended Fonte at the back.

Monaco should look to take advantage of Fonte’s absence at the back, while making sure joint league top scorer Jonathan David does not breach their defense. This clash looks likely to end in a stalemate with both teams playing conservatively to avoid a loss.

Our Picks

Both teams to score @ 1.55

Under 2.5 goals @ 2.15

Take a punt on the game to end in a draw @ 3.55
