Europa League betting tips & preview
With the ‘bigger’ European Club football games out of the way, attention now turns to the Europa League and Conference league games.
Will your favourite player score tonight? Will Ronaldo play for Manchester United? Have the favourites started looking ominously good yet? Will your favourite team win and land your acca?
Read on for answers to these questions!
Omonia Nicosia vs Man United
The answer is Yes. Cristiano Ronaldo will start, barring a late injury. While the Portuguese legend cannot sniff a start for Manchester United in the English Premier League, the Europa League has been a reliable source of minutes for him this season as he tries to work his way back to full fitness.
Several first team players in need of minutes like Harry McGuire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek are currently injured so the starting lineup will look very similar to the same one that started against Manchester City on Sunday.
Omonia Nicosia is at home and will fight valiantly to come away with this game with something, but we just don’t see that happening.
Arsenal vs Glimt
It’s all gone so well for Arsenal this season. Riding high at the top of the English Premier League and second in Group A (with a game in hand), the North London side’s fans will expect them to beat the visitors and climb over them back into first place.
There will be several changes for this one. Players like Thomas Partey, William Saliba, Alexandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Aaron Ramsdale are expected to get a deserved rest ahead of their Emirates matchup with Liverpool on Sunday. The drop-off in quality should be minimal but expect a more open game since the players in the lineup tonight have not played enough games together.
Glimt deserve their current top spot in Group A, but we just don’t see them leaving the Emirates Stadium with a positive result.
Expect more goals in the second half when either the home team pushes for a goal, or the away team tries to equalize and leaves more space behind.
Roma vs Real Betis
Fresh off a morale-boosting away victory against Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho and Roma will host Group C leaders, Real Betis, in hopes of claiming a win and ensuring that progression to the next round of the Europa League remains in Roman hands.
Real Betis, on the other hand, have been in good form lately, winning four of their last five games to sit atop Group C in the Europa League and in 4th place in the Spanish La Liga. They will be difficult to beat as they also want to claim a win that gives them 9 points from 3 games. Led by the still-deadly Joaquin, they will be a stern test for The Special One’s team.
It’s been a long road back for Jose Mourinho, who had been written off as past-it. A conference League win to hand Roma their first European title has not washed off that tag, but if the Portuguese Manager can lead Roma to Europa League victory this season, he will again be one of the hottest tickets in town again. Can you really bet against him doing just that?
Monaco vs Trabzonspor
In 2022, Monaco a long way from the heights they reached when they regularly locked horns with the Champions League elite and won. Today, they face Trabzonspor, hoping to climb over their rivals into second place and avoid a premature exit from the Europa League. Despite fielding the still-dangerous Wissam Ben Yedder upfront, Monaco have failed to click offensively, with just one goal in the Europa League this season.
Trabzonspor field some familiar names like Marc Bartra, Mahmoud Trezeguet and Marek Hamsik. They will look to this experienced trio to lead them to an away victory here. Despite scoring 4 goals already in the Europa League, the Turkish club still has a goal difference of 0 due to an inability to keep out goals after conceding 4 goals already. They will need to keep a tight ship here if they’re to win but we don’t see them being able to pull that off away.
Away team to score at least one goal. Home clean sheet (No) @ 1.48
FC Sheriff Tiraspol vs Real Sociedad
A year on from FC Sheriff’s stunning victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, they face a Real side again, but from Sociedad this time. With Manchester United in action away to Omonia Nicosia and expected to win, Sheriff will need to win to hold on to their 2nd place position.
That will be easier said than done against Real Sociedad, however. Despite losing Alexander Isak to Newcastle in the summer transfer window, on-loan duo, Alexander Sorloth and Takefusa Kubo, have filled in adequately backed up by David Silva in midfield.
Freiburg vs Nantes
Freiburg has been the surprise package of the Bundesliga this season, with 17 points from 8 games, ahead of both Bayern Munich and Dortmund. The German side’s surprising league form was also carried over into the Europa League; they currently top Group G with 6 points from 2 games, scoring four goals and conceding just once.
Nantes, on the other hand, are 16th in the French League and are third in the Europa League group with 3 points from two games, scoring just twice and conceding four goals already. On paper, this is a good matchup for Freiburg. We think the German side wins this one easily to pull clear of the chasing pack.
