England Win the Women’s EURO After 50+ years

England achieved a 2-1 victory over Germany in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 in a thrilling match at Wembley Stadium last week.

It was a final for the ages. Chloe Kelly scored an extra-time goal in the 110th-minute in front of a record crowd of 87,192 people, securing England’s first major international win since the 1966 World Cup, which was won by the men’s team.

Defeating eight-time Euro champions was no easy feat despite Germany losing their top-scorer Alexandra Popp to injury merely moments before the game kicked off. But the Lionesses pulled through in a remarkable victory that’s one for the books.

When the match went into extra time, the nerves went up. The situation echoed that of another European Championship final at Wembley Stadium last year, when the men’s side was leading by 1-0 but ended up being defeated on penalties by Italy.

But this one ended differently. Kelly scored one of the most important goals of her career, marking her name in history and sending Wembley into a frenzy of joy.

It was an exhilarating win for England, and the crowd and players were in high spirits. After the final whistle, the players celebrated with a dance and the crowd crooned their anthem “Sweet Caroline.”

This was the first major trophy for the captain of the team, Leah Williamson. The 25-year-old spoke about the significance of it all when lifting the trophy, calling it the proudest day of her life.
