Egypt Vs Morocco | AFCON Quarter Finals: Match Preview Betting Tips & Predictions
With the first round of quarterfinal games completed, old foes Egypt and Morocco meet today at the Stade Olembe to renew old rivalries.
After losing to Nigeria in the first group game, Egypt rallied to finish second with six points and advance to the round of 16, where they defeated Cote D’Ivoire on penalties.
Morocco, on the other hand, finished first in their group with seven points and came from behind to defeat Malawi in the first round of the knockouts.
Egypt vs Morocco Head-to Head
Both countries have met three times since 2017, with the results being evenly split: one win for Egypt, one win for Morocco, and one draw.
Morocco has been the most impressive country in this draw thus far. The Atlas Lions easily won Group C and defeated Malawi 2-1 in the first knockout round, thanks to impressive playing and coaching performances.
Egypt, on the other hand, has not exactly wowed tournament observers with the exceptional attacking play expected of a team boasting one of the world’s top three players.
Egypt Versus Morocco Team News
For Egypt, goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy had to be replaced late in their last game by Gabaski who was the hero of the penalty shoot-out later.
Barring any late changes, Gabaski will keep his place for the quarterfinals. The rest of the team is also expected to remain unchanged.
The Moroccan squad is also expected to remain the same with any changes likely to be tactical ones.
Egypt vs Morocco Prediction
Egypt’s head coach, Carlos Queiroz, was criticized for his squad selection prior to the tournament, as Egyptian pundits and fans were perplexed by his decision to leave out star midfielders Tarek Hamed and Magdi Afsha, among others.
Since the start of AFCON 2021, the midfield’s inability to create enough chances has drawn even more criticism, as star man Mohamed Salah has been denied the service he requires to thrive.
While the Pharaohs have gotten this far by remaining compact, they will need their star player to be firing on all cylinders against an impressive Moroccan side.
Morocco has been one of the best and most entertaining teams at this AFCON tournament, and they will be aware that if they continue to play like this, they have a chance to win the tournament for the second time.
In Achraf Hakimi, they have a player with the physical and technical gifts to dominate the entire right flank alone and in recent games, has added a new string to his bow with his accurate free-kicks.
Our prediction: If Egypt is unable to bring Salah into the game and pin the Moroccan defense back, they will be inviting trouble as players like Hakimi and Boufal will stretch the play and create opportunities for Youssef En-Nesyri to score.
Egypt to win: 3.40
Morocco to win: 2.60
