Afcon Tragedy: At Least Six Dead & Multiple Injured in Stampede
It’s a sad morning for African football today. Yesterday’s Cameroon vs Comoros Afcon match turned fatal, with at least 6 people reported dead in a stampede outside the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.
In addition to the deaths, multiple people have been reported injured, with the local hospital reporting as many as 40 cases.
The incident resulted due to a massive crowd that gathered outside the area, trying to make their way into an already-packed stadium. Despite its 60,000 people capacity, the stadium was not allowed to be more than 80% full due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, over 50,000 people tried to get in, which resulted in one of the worst incidences in Afcon history.
The Confederation of African Football issued a statement saying that they’re trying to get more details on what happened. One of their officials also visited the injured people at the hospital.
Cameroon President Paul Biya has also spoken out, urging everyone to practice caution as the country plays host to the continent’s biggest sports tournament in 50 years.
