Is Algeria Staring at an Early Exit After Shocking 1-0 Loss to E/Guinea?

Afcon 2021 has been thrown wide open with the shock defeat of the reigning champions Algeria against the Equatorial Guinea team on January 16th. Equatorial Guinea ended Algeria’s 4-year winning streak in what’s being dubbed as the biggest upset of this year’s Afcon Cup.


For defending champions Algeria, it’s a case of back to the drawing board as they face the prospect of possible elimination from the tournament. The shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of outsiders Equatorial Guinea has also destroyed their record of 35 unbeaten matches, only 2 less than Italy’s world record of 37.

This was the second setback for the Algerian squad following a draw against Sierra Leone at 0-0. Fans had been hoping for a lot more from Algeria’s Afcon fixtures but the team seems to be going through a rough patch.

For the opposing team, the 70th-minute goal scored by Esteban Obiang has improved their chances of progressing to the next stage considerably. With this result, the standings in the Afcon table present a unique position.

Currently, Ivory Coast sits at the top of Group E with 4 points. Surprise package Equatorial Guinea finds itself at the second spot with 3 points due to its shock victory. Sierra Leone is in third place with 2 points followed by defending champions Algeria with a single point. Fans are still trying process the fact that 2019’s Afcon winners now find themselves at the last place in their group and may not even qualify for the next round.

The coming match which puts Ivory Coast against Algeria will be an interesting one as both teams will be looking to salvage their position and improve their chances of qualifying to the knock-out stages. A win for any team would automatically guarantee qualification.
