Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Contracts Covid-19 Ahead of Afcon

Arsenal superstar and Gabon captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has tested positive for COVID-19 along with teammate Mario Lemina. Both players had met up earlier this week in Dubai to socialize before travelling to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations. Upon arrival in Yaounde, they had to take a PCR test, which showed up positive for both players.

The 32-year-old Aubameyang, who has recently been exiled from Arsenal because of disciplinary issues, was set to lead Gabon against Comoros on Monday in their first Afcon 2021 match. However, both him and the former Southampton midfielder Lemina are currently in isolation and will miss their first two Afcon fixtures if their results show up positive again.

In addition to the two players, Gabon’s assistant coach Yala Anicet’s result also came back positive for Covid-19 and he is also expected to remain in isolation until a negative result in obtained.

This is a major setback for the Gabon squad, who had big hopes for the Afcon Cup. The team will have to kick off the tournament minus their all-time top scorer and their skipper, which could make a significant impact on their performance. If their results come back positive once again, the two players will be racing against time to make it to other group matches.
