The first Afcon tournament was held in 1957 in Sudan, in which Egypt defeated Ethiopia to become the first country to win the Cup.

To this day, Egypt remains the country with the most victories, winning the tournament a total of 7 times in the 64-year Afcon history.

The Afcon highest goal scorer is Cameroonian Samuel Eto’oEto’o, who has scored a total of 18 in the competition.

Nigeria has the highest record of reaching the top 3 position with a total of 15 appearances, achieving the 3rd place 8 times, reaching the runners-up spot 4 times and becoming Afcon winners a total of 3 times.

This year, three teams remain favourites to win the Cup, namely Senegal, Algeria and Egypt. The latter has a stellar record along with players like Mo Salah as part of the time. As for Algeria, they won the tournament in 2019, which makes them a good contestant this year. Senegal have also had a strong presence in the tournament in the past, being the first runners-up in 2019.
