Messi’s Impressive Form at the COPA AMERICA
Six-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi is currently in search of his first international trophy with the Argentine national team at the Copa America tournament in Brazil. He has had a very impressive outing with the national team at the tournament showcasing his superb talent and proving that the team can bank on him to rise to the occasion
The Argentine star opened his account in the tournament when he scored his 73rd international goal with a sublime free-kick in Argentina’s opening game against Chile, although the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In their second group B fixture against Uruguay, He provided a fantastic assist for Rodriguez which give his team a 1-0 victory. Messi picked up the ball from a short corner and went past his marker before providing the cross to Rodriguez at the back post who nodded the ball into the net. The victory was very significant for them as the three points saw the La Albiceleste move to the top in group B and a step closer to the quarterfinals of the competition.
In their third game against Paraguay, Messi equaled Mascherano’s record as the most capped player in the nation’s history with 147 appearances. Alejandro Gomez grabbed the only goal in the 10th-minute of a highly tensed match at Estadio Nacional de Brasília. The move for the goal began when Lionel Messi picked the ball up from deep and charged at the opposing defense to create space for his colleagues. He then passed the ball to Angel di Maria who gave a perfectly lined through ball to Gomez inside the box and the Sevilla player produced a wonderful chip to beat Anthony Silva in the Paraguay goal.
Messi was in top form in their fourth group game against Bolivia. He set up Alejandro Gomez to volley home the opening goal in the sixth minute. The Barcelona player went on to double the lead from the penalty spot just after the half-hour mark and scored another goal to make it 3-0 just before halftime. Messi’s goals were his 74th and 75th for the national side and he set a new record of 148th appearances for his team. The match ended in a 4-1 victory to Argentina.
Argentina is now unbeaten in 17 games. Their last defeat was at the Semi-finals of the Copa America tournament against Brazil in 2019. Messi has never won the Copa America trophy, and this might be his last chance to get his hands on the trophy. With his current form and impact in his side’s journey at the ongoing Copa America, the 33-year-old will be hoping to silence his doubters at the international level by lifting his first silverware with Argentina.
They play Ecuador next in their quarter-final fixture. Ecuador held Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their last group game and Argentina cannot afford to lose concentration at this point if they are to progress to the semi-finals of the tournament. They know what is at stake and will look to be on their A-game all through the tournament.
