How Chelsea and Man City could Line up for the UCL Final

Man city and Chelsea

The Champions League final will see first-time finalists, Manchester City take on 2012 winners Chelsea. Both teams dispatched their semifinal opponents to make the Champions League final an all-English affair with all to play for. Let’s take an in-depth look as to how both teams could line up for the finals.

Pep Guardiola will be looking to win his third European trophy, his first since he left Barcelona while Thomas Tuchel will be pushing to be the only other manager to lead Chelsea to a Champions League victory since Roberto Di Matteo.

In their last 5 encounters, Man City have won 5 games scoring a total of 16 goals while Chelsea have won 4 games and have scored 9 goals. This fixture will surely be thrilling as desperate Man City face wounded Chelsea who recently lost to Leicester in the FA cup final.

Manchester City would most likely continue with the defensive duo of John Stones and the ever-impressive Ruben Dias, with Kyle Walker and Oleksandr Zinchenko supporting on either side of the defense. Man City have conceded only 4 goals in their UCL journey this season.

Fernandinho who celebrated his 36th birthday not long ago could take his place in the middle of the park ahead of Rodri, with Gundogan and Bernado Silva taking up spots alongside the Brazilian in midfield.

Riyad Mahrez was the star player in the semifinal match against PSG scoring 3 goals in both legs and should be rewarded with a place in the team on the right. Raheem Sterling has had dwindling fortunes in the team due to his inconsistent form and Phil Foden who has been impressive could start on the left ahead of Sterling.

It is left to be seen if Pep would go with De Bruyne in the false 9 as he did in both legs of the Semifinal or probably switch things up and start with either Gabriel Jesus or Aguero as a striker. Man City’s attack produced 25 goals in the UCL so far this season and will be looking to increase the tally when they face Chelsea.

Manchester City Possible Starting Line-Up:
Ederson; Kyle Walker, Dias, Stones, Zinchenko; Fernandinho, Gundogan, Bernado Silva; Mahrez, De Bruyne, Foden

Chelsea is currently one of the most compact sides defensively with 11 clean sheets in 17 league games under Tuchel, as Thiago Silva continues to marshal the backline admirably with the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen back to being regulars in the team.

The presence of Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has also been a major reason behind Chelsea’s improved defensive record this season with the goalkeeper having kept 23 clean sheets in all competitions, the Senegalese goalkeeper is a sure bet to start if fit. Chelsea have also only conceded 4 goals in the UCL this season.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have formed a strong partnership since Croatian Midfielder, Kovacic sustained an injury and has been absent from the squad. A return to fitness for Kovacic might give Tuchel a bit of a selection headache.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Ben Chilwell could also retain their places on the flanks with Reece James and Marcos Alonso on the bench as backups.

Thomas Tuchel continues to rotate his front line between Christian Pulisic, Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, and Timo Werner. However, it is left to be seen which three out of the four front men will start, with Thomas Tuchel surprisingly benching Pulisic for the second leg of the semifinal, starting Kai Havertz who was impressive throughout his stay on his pitch. Chelsea’s attack have scored 22 goals in the UCL this season.

Chelsea Possible Starting Lineup:
Mendy; Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Christensen; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kante, Chilwell; Mount, Pulisic; Werner
