Can Mourinho Appointment Bring Success to AS Roma

Can Mourinho

After leaving Tottenham, Jose Mourinho mentioned to the footballing world that he wasn’t going for a break. He signed up for punditry jobs in the interim, however, footballing fans never expected him to take up a job this soon and especially not AS Roma.

According to reports, Mourinho was pursued by Roma’s sporting director, Tiago Pinto who convinced the board to snap up Mourinho while he was still available and informed current coach, Paulo Fonseca of the development and pursuit.

Ever since the announcement of his employment, Mourinho has set Serie A and the city of Rome into a frenzy. Recently, a picture of Mourinho on a bike was drawn on one of the walls in the city of Rome. However, there are still some assumptions that Jose Mourinho is finished as the Special One.

This makes the appointment even more interesting, AS Roma and Jose Mourinho have two things in common, the “finished” tag.  Does Mourinho have the same touch he had when he coached teams like Porto, Inter & Chelsea?

Mourinho’s History in Italy

Jose Mourinho had previously coached Inter Milan in one of its most successful eras, losing only 15 games in total in 108 matches. He won the UEFA Champions League in his final season defeating teams like Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He is held in great esteem at the Nerazzurri.

Coincidentally, Mourinho is returning a season after Inter Milan has finally won the Scudetto again after a barren run of 11 years (their last scudetto was won by Jose Mourinho). He won the treble which consists of the league, a Coppa Italia title, Champions League title in 2009-2010.

Assessing the AS Roma Team

The amazing thing about the AS Roma project is that there will be no heavy budgets as Mourinho has had in most of the clubs managed, he won’t be able to fight with the press week in, week out.

On assessing the current team, you’d find that the key striker, Edin Dzeko’s contract is about to expire, and he will be leaving the club. Mkhitaryan & Pedro who joined the club not long ago might also be on the way out. Pedro is an interesting case as he made some unkind comments when Mourinho was sacked at Chelsea.

The positive thing is that AS Roma team is filled with young players that can be developed into world stars. These players include Italian defender, Gianluca Mancini and Albanian defender Marash Kumbulla, midfielders Jordan Veretout and Gonzalo Villar, the club captain in Lorenzo Pellegrini, and fast-rising star Nicolo Zaniolo.

These are worthy players Mourinho can build his team around, with one or two marquee signings.

What defines success for Mourinho

Mourinho will set out to do what Fabio Cappello achieved in winning the scudetto in 2001, he must create a winning mentality culture in the club. Given the current position, Mourinho might finally have full backing from the top management at AS Roma. Something he has always wanted at clubs he has managed.

As mentioned in his announcement speech, Mourinho said “After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.”

Only he understands the full blueprint AS Roma intends to operate from next season as he succeeds Paulo Fonseca. However, we hope this is not another typical Mourinho appointment. He has won a trophy at every club he managed until his last job at Tottenham Hotspur.

We can only but imagine how well his reign will be. Time reveals all things.
